A Betrayal of Trust

Unionville High School

The voters of the Unionville-Chadds Ford School district have twice — twice — voted down a proposal to spend more than $62 million to renovate Unionville High School. Now, despite tht fact, the Board of Education wants to finance the improvements — now increased to nearly $70 million — with a risky, balloon-style loan to the school district.

Almost no one argues that the school needs renovations — too many students have classes in temporary trailers. A very solid, comprehensive plan would have cost just shy of $30 million and probably would have garnered broad support from the community as reasonable and needed expense. Coming in at twice that number, well it was pretty obvious that it was doomed to fail. And it did, twice.
